Freshwater wetland in watershed

October 24, 2000 was an important date. That was the date that President Clinton signed the bill to designate the White Clay Creek a Wild and Scenic River! About one-third of our New London Township (the northeast area) is included in this. It has been eight years of meetings conducted by staff of the National Park Service with representatives aof all the involved municipalities.

This is the first complete watershed (191 miles) to be so designated and to have a watershed management plan to guide implementation of the designation.

Red and White Clay Creek PL-566 Program

The Red and White Clay PL-566 Program is a federal cost share program administred by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). It offers a 75% cost share to landowners in the Red and White Clay Creek Watersheds to reforest riparian areas. The funding also includes cost shares for fencing to exclude livestock from the stream, stream crossings for livestock and equipment access, streambank restoration and reforestation of degraded pasture land in upland areas. Those eligible for the program include landowners in these watersheds who have streams on their properties that are not forested which may include farmers, housing developments, businesses and municipalities. The cost share is a reimbursement; the landowner is required to make the initial payments. For more information about this program, please contact Jessie Farrell at (610) 869-4285.
